Here is my tribute to New York.
And I must tell you all that I was born in New York City on VJ Day. Mom
and dad were looking out the window of the hospital, mom from her bed,
as the air was filled with all the ticker tape floating in the air. My
mom and dad always teased me about trying to make myself more important
than the world affairs. I have so many memories as a child there.
We lived in Brooklyn but my Aunt lived in Manhattan and she was rich. We
were poor. But I use to cross the Williamsburg Bridge that was ramped right
in front of my Grandparents apartment. I remember gram taking me to the
circus and to Chinatown, and to Delancy Street to shop. I remember
living in Coney Island and walking the boardwalk. A marvelous City New
York. Time Square and all the light and glamour and hustle and bustle.
The Statue of Liberty, The Steeplechase, The Tunnel and the Ferry. The
mix of people on the streets. I can still see them, Jews, Chinese, Japanese
and Porto Ricans, Blacks and Whites and each with their own story to tell.
I remember as a child going round the corner to get a Crème soda
at the drug store fountain stand. And the sound of the horses hoofs on
the brick street as the junk vendor clopped down the street in his wagon
with the bells clanging. I remember the anticipation of the slush man and
buy a coconut flavored ice for a nickel. Each day my brother and I would
go to the corner to buy a penny candy and come home with a sackful
for a penny. Oh, yes, New York what a marvelous town. A City that will
not give up and City that is Strong and A City that will live on in my
heart till the day I die. I LOVE NEW YORK!!!!Hugs,
Wrinks
