First, let me say I'm sorry it's been a while since I've updated anything here. I thought it would be of interest to show how to set up WPA easily between Panther and the WAP54G.
I've been wanting to set up WPA to get rid of the security problems of WEP. I noticed that with Panther came support for 802.1x. My WAP54G, with the latest firmware, also supports WPA, so I decided to give it a try.
I started heading down the road of setting up freeradius, but never got to a point where network traffic would actually flow. But along the way, I discovered the so-called "WPA Personal" setting for connecting up. It turns out that this is the same thing as what the WAP54G calls "WPA Shared Key" mode.
So it's trivial to set up. Just tell your WAP54G to use "WPA Shared key", select TKIP, and make up a pass phrase and type it in. Next, pull down from the AirPort icon in the main menu to "Other...". In the pulldown, select "WPA Personal", and type in the network name and passphrase.
One thing that's still unknown is how well this plays with Windows machines. I believe that all you have to do is set up WPA-PSK mode and type in the passphrase. If anyone else has any experience, you might report here (even though this is a MacOS X blog, it's nice to interoperate).
Posted by nsayer at November 8, 2003 07:56 PMpurchased the linksys and installed in in a my blue and white running panther... worked within seconds of installation!
But then I ran software update and installed the airport software 3.2. Now it won't connect somehow the DHCP settings don't set themselves up properly. Any suggestions?
Great - this worked! The main problem I've noticed is that even though I connect via WPA successfully using this process, I still get an error. Waking from sleep doesn't automatically reconnect me to my AP; I believe it's because Airport isn't storing my WPA key properly, but I have no idea how to work around this.
Posted by: Neil at November 16, 2003 08:45 AMNeil! I'm so glad I found this post.
I've been using 802.11g with my DLink wap/router. When Panther came out, I switched it all over to WPA Personal.
I connect, but I'm having the exact same problem you are. My passphrase works, I get a connection, but I get an error box telling me there was a problem and I hit ok. After sleep, it comes back up disconnected as you described.
Also I notice the following (if this helps anyone). As I'm typing my WPA Personal key into Panther, the "Accept" button does not become active for a number of characters, but my passphrase is much longer. This may be no more than a security precaution on apple's part.
Hopefully someone will have some input on this.

Posted by: John at November 19, 2003 08:59 AMI am having a difficult problem getting my airtport setup. I have a G4 server running Panther server. It acts as a router. I have a gigabit hub for the desktops and I recently purchansed a Linksys WAP54G Access Point. I can not get my 12" P-Book to access the internet. What configurations did you you for the WAP54G? Do you maybe have screen shots or could you go through the different tabs? I have spent nights with no sucess.... I would appreciate any help
Posted by: Kirk Mueller at November 29, 2003 10:08 PMI have the same problem with WPA+Panther+IbookG4+Dlink Di-624. I connect but get an error box, anyway.
WPA works great for me on a Linksys WRT54G with both OS 10.3.2 and Win XP.
Posted by: Ryan Marsh at February 14, 2004 09:29 PMI'm also trying to use a WRT54G with my G4 tower. With one exception, I want to use the WPA Enterprise security model, which with authenticate with a radius server. It works with one problem, i get authenticated, but i get no DHCP info from the Linksys..
Posted by: todd at March 12, 2004 12:09 PMFolks using d-link wireless devices need to check your firmware updates.. I use a DI-524 they came out with an update the fix WPA-PSK bug...

Hey there... i have an Hp Pavilion Laptop with Win Xp Home Edition... with a Linksys Network PC Card... WPC11... and now i have a Apple Airport Extreme...and my question is how do i connect the linksys to the airport with my powerbook G4... and get the internet...
any help will be appreciated...
Posted by: Vikram Chohan at April 4, 2004 11:16 PMmaybe someone here can help me out. I have a linksys 4 port router hard wired into another linksys 4 port at my neighbors. My neighbor is hooked into the dsl line, so basically i have my linksys set up as an access point. I am positive that the linksys is configured correctly. for some reason, even though i get a full signal that recognizes the network, i still get a screwed up ip adress and cant acess the internet. If i hard wire the linksys into my ethernet card everything is fine, so ithink it has something to do with airport extreme. I would love some ideas if anyone wants to email me.
Posted by: Kevin Eskridge at April 5, 2004 10:36 PMi was wondering if there is any way to hack the AEBS software so that i could have everyone that uses my network go first to a page specified by me. I have a store and want them when they use my hotspot to have to go to my homepage first before they do anything else. I was thinking that the AEBS would just redirect the first http request made from an ip to a specified site??? I have no idea if this is possible or how to begin to have it done.. I am not looking to spend that much $.

Posted by: Mark Mongold at April 18, 2004 10:03 PMIt's no longer necessary. The drivers just work with the WPC54G and other such cards.
Help ! I have an apple Airport network. I have a Toshiba (Linksys adapter) running XP Professional that connects just fine with WEP enabled.
However, I just added an HP Pavillion (broadvision adapter) running XP Home. It "sees" the network, but isn't getting a DHCP address. I've checked the network adapter and TCP configurations; they match the ones on the XP Pro box.
So, what's the problem with XP home ?!!!!!!
Posted by: Catherine at April 19, 2004 08:27 AMFolks, this isn't a general support forum. You're far more likely to get quick replies to your questions by trying the Apple support forums, or some forums that, oh, gosh I don't know, maybe have something to do with Windows.
I have a problem with trying to get my PowerBook 1400cs configured to connect through the Internet using a Linksys Router. The back of the computer has the Ethernet port, but I have no idea if it works or not.
Can anybody offer me any help? What do I need to do?
Posted by: Robert at May 29, 2004 04:00 PMI failed to mention, my PowerBook is running OS 8.5 and I really don't want to deal with 9.1 if I can keep from it.
Is there any help you can give me?
Posted by: Robert at May 29, 2004 04:02 PMI updated the firmware for my WAP54G v1? With the latest v2 firmware and totally screwed my WAP54G. Could I take the card out of the WAP54G and put it in to my Snow Airport? I have tried reflashing the firmware from the Linksys Setup utility, but the PC can't find it as being connected.
stuck using slow Snow.

what if you want to use AES instead of TKIP?
~owen
i hate chickens, take them out of my e-mail...
the company is switching to Cisco AP's with a Cisco radius server. we are using PEAP and TKIP. I can't seem to get my titaium with Panther to connect. I have installed the certificate to X509 anchors and tell the 802.1x to use Peap, but... no connection and the log doesn't tell me anything
Posted by: Dwight at June 28, 2004 10:50 AMGabe Anderson seems to have figured out some of this WEP AirPort Extreme client and Linksys WiFi access point stuff. Basically, don't use WEP but give only specific MAC addresses access. Works for most mixed Win/Mac home networks. Try:

Posted by: sam at June 29, 2004 09:42 AMI have windows base network connected to the internet with linksys wireless router and I want to extend my range using a snow airport as an access point but my snow airport doesn't recognise the network.
Any suggestion how can I connect this things?
Posted by: Erick at August 6, 2004 09:35 AMwe have a wireless network on the campus where I work and a computer lab that is of corse network with normal cat 5 and also networked into the wireless for internet and admin network access. Our first problem is that in the lab connecting via the wireless access point allows internet surfing but when I go wired which is connected to a wireless bridge we cant surf the net. I am a net admin and the rest of the admins cant figure it out?
Question two: the airport can connect to the wireless network fine with the wep key but it wont give me the option to store it? The first key it detect that the wan might be using is wpa but we arent. why? is there a software for storing weps and automatically reconnecting after waking from sleep?
Posted by: Jim Hurley at September 13, 2004 11:14 AMBe aware of the security implications of using WPA-PSK ('Personal'). If using a weak password you are no safer than using WEP. Certainly, it seems you are safer using a proper TKIP setup (i.e. with separate pairwise keys for each client, which may mean using RADIUS). See:

Just set up a Linksys WAP54G v2.0 and connected a Powerbook G4 (802.11g) 10.3.5 and an IBM thinkpad x40 (802.11b) WinXP SP2. Works great, range is fine.
AES encryption doesn't work between the Powerbook and AP, although it sounds like it *should* (http://www.linksys.com/download/vertxt/wap54gv2_fw_ver207.txt). I did not check the IBM. Happy using TKIP now, but would like to know what the issue is.
Posted by: Carl at October 26, 2004 09:54 AMI have a WAP54G v1.1, I set up one wireless node and all was well, until I upgraded the firmware to version 2.07 I believe. Now the password (admin) does not work and I cannot access the AP. It reads some bogus address 1.192.168.1, instead of 192.168.1.1 once it even read 1.10.1.1, (I have a thomson speedtouch 510 v4 that uses the address 10.0.0.138 and dchp is on, with subnet mask 255.0.0.0) I have tried on several occasions to reset the AP using the reset switch at the back of the unit by powering it up and then holding it down until the lights blink, indicating that it has reset, usually takes like 10 seconds or so, i hold it down for over a minute just to be sure. still no success. defective you think?
Posted by: Ryan at March 21, 2005 07:30 AMI just set up a PC with a Dlink wireless card and Airport Extreme base station. The DLink card saw the network but would not connect until i changed the airport settings to a WPA Personal security access. I typed in the password on the PC and voila!!! I was on in seconds. The funny thing is I called Dlink for support and they had no clue how to get the card to work with airport....the tech person was not familiar with the brand called "Apple"!! Go figure!
Posted by: SK at July 15, 2005 07:25 AMi have a g4 laptop with a belkin54 router. a few days ago, my computer stopped connecting to the router for some unknown reason-- i changed NOTHING. the computer "sees" the router, but will not connect to it. i bought a new router, thinking maybe my old one got fried, but i still have the same problem. and, i did bring my computer to the appe store, and it did connect to the store's airport network. but, when i got home, my computer again wouldn't connect to my wireless hub. what's wrong? this is driving me crazy. thanks.
Posted by: Will at January 5, 2006 10:11 AMHaving same type of issues, only this is iBook G4, OSX 10.4.2, and Airport Extreme connecting to a D-Link DI-624. The iBook many times won't connect after being in sleep, and it now won't connect even after a reboot. It sees the SSID, tries to connect, but I get the "an error occured" message which I could kill the programmer that thought a vague message would work here!!! I feel like I'm in Apple's version of DLL hell. It all started after Apple's last Airport update, around 11-05-2005. I'm wondering if Apple didn't screw the pooch on this one.
FYI, the Windows clients, including an iPAQ, and a Nintendo DS all work fine. Only the iBook with Airport Extreme does not. And the only thing I recall is that last software update from Apple. LE SIGH!
Thinking of trying a replacement Extreme card but hate spending another $79 on something that shouldn't cost more than $49 and they having it still not work due to Apple's software drivers.
Posted by: woody at January 5, 2006 01:47 PMJust a follow up, got mine working by disabling Xtreme-G mode in the advanced settings of my D-Link DI-624. I think this will work for the equivalent Netgear, Linksys, and SMC products that used their own proprietary 108-mbps modes. Disabling these will force the router to use the 802.11g/b standard mode and thus make the router more compatible with all your wireless devices.
Worked for me anyhow, worth a try. And still keeps your WEP or WPA encryption, so it's a MUCH SAFER fix. Good luck!
Posted by: woody at January 5, 2006 06:57 PMHow can i Hack this
Posted by: Sun at February 10, 2006 12:55 AMConcur with Woody re: the fix for my D-Link DI-624. After 2 days of muddling with my iBook G4 and an hour of troubleshooting with Apple Care where I was told to run WEP ("it's just as secure" - bah!!), I disabled Super-G mode in the router and all of a sudden, Safari loaded the page.
Posted by: iban at March 24, 2006 05:03 PMWhat a piece of junk ! I was told by Apple retail store clerks it will work any wireless G access points. But No! At my house my PC can see no less than 6 wireless AP's (some from neighbors, one mine). But this Airport card can only see one (which is an Apple Airport Station)! Trid everything ( Googled, set encryption modes, slow downed my LinkSys WAP tranfering bitrate to 2Mbps etc...) and no luck. Returning it tomorrow.
Posted by: Jpenguin at May 9, 2006 11:03 AMI have an ibook G3 700 Airport firmware 9.52 with a linksys router. I was having no luck at all connecting to WPA AES from the ibook. My Pc connected somewhat fine. It wasn't until I finally tried changing my routers encryption mode from AES to TKIP. Once I changed it VIOLA! My Airport on my ibook connected easily. In fact I'm writing this on my ibook with the connection. Hope this info might be useful to someone as I was scouring the net for info too.
