You can go fetch it here. So far as I can tell, it does not update the AppleAirPort2.kext at all, so so far as I know, you can download and install it with impunity. No word yet on whether it fixes anything important, as I am on the road and away from wireless LANs at the moment.
The AirPort 3.0 Update fixes the trouble I was having when restarting with the Linksys WMP54G PCI card in my B&W G3.
It may be a fluke, but I got airport to connect WITHOUT the hack.
It seems worth trying, especially if you've had trouble.
Posted by: Hans at March 26, 2003 05:27 PMUm, I bet you're using your internal AirPort card. Check the Ethernet address of your AirPort card. Unless it starts with 00:06:25, it's not the Linksys card.
Either that, or you had *previously* installed the hack, and the update didn't overwrite AppleAirPort2.kext driver (which I don't believe it does).
Posted by: Nick Sayer at March 26, 2003 07:45 PMYou are correct that the hack was previously installed. Before the AirPort 3 update my system would hang on startup, requiring undoing the hack and restoring default settings before restart, then re-applying the hack and kextloading after startup.
The hack was applied and AirPort was active when I installed the update. After the mandatory restart, everything worked like it's "supposed to."
Summary: the Linksys card now works in my B&W G3 (with the hack) without my having to jump through hoops on every restart.
Posted by: Hans at March 27, 2003 05:34 AMAirport 3 has solved my hang on boot issue with a Belkin 54g PCI card. I installed Airport 3 while the hack was enabled, rebooted and got no hang on boot. Airport was running, tried sharing the internet with my ibook over airport, and it worked. Made sure it worked again by rebooting again without disabling the hack, booted fine again. Seems that apple has fixed something that didn't allow Airport extreme cards to have a different device ID at boot time maybe? Anyway, would like to hear of other success stories.

Posted by: Mike at March 27, 2003 01:54 PMI can confirm that airport 3, fixes boot problems and the problem with the airport signal meter.
Airport 3 also seems to make my internet connection more stable.
Posted by: Robbie at March 27, 2003 01:56 PMI will concur that the boot problem has gone away. I had a succesful boot with the wpc54g card installed.
Posted by: DomitianX at March 27, 2003 02:24 PMI have a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G, updated fireware to 1.01.4), a WPC54G Linksys Wireless-G, and a 400 mHz Powerbook G4. I successfully applied the perl script patch and have enjoyed wireless network access for 2 weeks. I initially had the same hang-on-boot problem that others have reported if the card was inserted upon reboot. Installation of the recent airport 3 update resolved that problem.
However, I've recently discovered that I seem to be working in 802.11b mode at all times, regardless of my distance from the router. I've kept the router in mixed-mode (b & g) since I set it up so that an older ibook could access the network with it's airport card. If I attempt to put the router in 802.11g-only mode, I can no longer connect to the router through my WPC54G card on my powerbook. I can detect the router using Internet Connect, but when I attempt to connect to it, I get a message that "There was an error joining the selected Airport network". Does anyone have any thoughts as to what the problem might be or is there anyone with a similar linksys-wireless-g only setup who can confirm that they are working in 802.11g mode?
Thanks,
-Jeff
Posted by: Jeff Ubersax at March 30, 2003 06:42 PMThis appears to be a bug in Apple's driver. It won't hook up to a Linksys AP that has the latest firmware (but without the latest firmware, the Linksys APs had trouble associating with 802.11b only devices).
You can confirm that you're getting 802.11g speeds by simply running lots of data, like an FTP transfer through it to a wired host on the other side. You should get upwards of 20 mbits/sec or so, which is about 4-5 times higher than you would get with 802.11b
Posted by: Nick Sayer at March 30, 2003 09:47 PMAnyone have any issues printing to a Samba printer with the G cards? I used to be able to print to the Epson I have shared off an XP box, but now I cant.
The 2 things I have done since the last time I printed was installing the AE hack, AipPort 3 update the security and quicktime updates released a few days ago.
Just trying to figure out which caused the problem.
OK, boot problem has gone away, but ... still having some problems here.
My PB G4 is trying to share its internet connection via a WPC54G that's trying to connect to a WMP54G in a Windows XP Pro box.
I can ping both ways, but when I check the "Wireless Connection Activity Status" on the XP box, the number of packets received is *very* low - not zero, but next to zero.
Interestingly, the Network Utility on the Mac side is showing the Link Status as Inactive, even as the Transfer Statistics, both Sent & Recv, click along.
I've not enabled the firewall on the XP, btw. I had enabled it previously, when it was doing the sharing, but that card is now disabled. It's not possible that that firewall is still active somehow, is it?... That *would* explain the fact that next-to-no packets are being received, wouldn't it?...
Finally, settings on the (ahem) "AirPort" card: 10.0.2.1 manually w/ Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0. The XP's got a manual 10.0.2.2 w/ the same subnet mask and 10.0.2.1 as the router.
I'm sure I'm doin' something wrong here, but can't figure out what it is. I'll be grateful for any suggestions! Tks...
Posted by: Matthew Weymar at April 9, 2003 07:28 PMMany apologies! 'Twas much ado about nothing. I had simply failed to set the DNS server up properly - as one *million* webpages suggested might be the problem.... I guess I'd ASSuMEd this wouldn't eliminate virtually all incoming packets - and so'd neglected to follow up on the suggestion.... Dumb, dumb, dumb....
Posted by: Matthew Weymar at April 9, 2003 09:31 PMThe AirPort Extreme update that is installed by the Mac OS X 10.2.5 updater breaks the perl script.
This is the new hex address:
$patchloc = 0x4e954;
After running the script again, everything works great.

10.2.6, WPC54g, WRT54g (G-only), & PB400 WORKS!!!
I am here to confirm that i got this hack to work with a WPC54g and a WRT54g (linksys's 54g router and card) on a Powerbook 400mhz. My OS is 10.2.6!!!
It took no special configs... my linksys router is operating G-only. So that isnt a problem either.

I have typed all of the IP addresses I can find, the subnet masks, what is the hex password anyway? I'm clueless. Please someone help me. I'm losing my mind.

I have a Linksys WMP54G. The card install process is very simple (a Dell Optiplex, Windows XP that I was given) I'm using an Apple Airport Extreme. It is necessary to set this to 40 bit WEP security a use a five character password (which is not the Airport's default settings).
The signal strength is fine but the connection to the Dell drops every 5 minutes whereas the iBook is fine.
Another issue is that although the Dell can see my iBook G4, my iBook cannot see the Dell. In terms of IP addresses, the Airport Extreme gives itself 10.0.1.1, and the Dell 10.0.1.2 and the iBook 10.0.1.3. What's odd though is that if I Ping the IP address assigned to the Dell by running cmd Ping 10.0.1.2, the Dell cannot see it's own network adaptor.
Anyone been able to overcome thes issues?

What happens when you try 128 bit encryption? I found this post on google search as I just bought a WMP54G card for a custom built machine (WinXP Athlon XP2000) and trying to setup a wireless connect to Airport Extreme. I had to take back a D-Link card that wouldn't even install properly.
I tried 40bit and now it works, though I've dropped a couple times - but I've been on now 90 minutes plus, so I guess I'll have to monitor...
Tech support at Linksys says I have to upgrade Windows...
Posted by: naum at May 29, 2004 05:34 PMI have installed a LinkSys WMP54G PCI Wireless 'g' card in a B&W G3 with no problems. In order to get the WEP 128bit security set up, I had to use the "Create Network Connection" feature in the Airport pop-down menu. There, you can select 40 bit or 128 bit security (Airport 3.1.1). Put in the 13 character ASCII key (exactly) and you are almost in business. Go back to the Airport pop-down menu and select the router i.d. from the list and 128bit security will still be active. I have not verified if this holds through reboots. My router is a Motorola WRT850G - I set the key (13 Char. ASCII) there first. Everything comes with no WEP security enabled; so, you have to set that up after you get reliable connections. Hope this helps.
Posted by: kjl at June 1, 2004 11:55 AMHow on earth did you set up a Linksys WMP54G on a Mac? I put mine in, and my G4 showed me no sign that the card was present. [OSX 10.3.7; 733MHz; not otherwise connected to net at the time].
I tried running the Airport Setup Assistant, and it simply told me no Airport card was present.
What must I do, after installing the card, to get the Apple to use it? If there's a step-by-step guide on the web, I'd appreciate a URL. Thanks in advance,
Moonie
