Bugs in G-only vs. mixed mode networks?

I was trying to help my friend (all PCs) get his new WAP54G set up this afternoon, and after much gnashing of teeth, I found that there is a new firmware version on the Linksys site that makes mixed mode configuration much more reliable.

So when I got home, I installed it on my WAP54G only to find that the TiBook would no longer associate.

It turns out that the difference was that I told my AP to be "G only" rather than mixed-mode (802.11g and b). My conclusion is that there must be a bug in Apple's driver (since a WPC54G stuck in a winxp box doesn't have the problem) that impacts the way the WAP54G now does G only configuration (because this used to work).

So if you've set up your AP to exclude 802.11b and are having trouble associating, try turning 802.11b compatibility back on.

The Apple Extream ( in New PG4 ) terminal CAN'T change the mode.
So, it does not associate between the some 802.11b Access Points (Base Station).

Because, in an association request packet, Extream terminal reports itself as the length of "BSSRate" is 12.

(Maximum of Specified Length was 8 in "802.11 1999)

The Buffalo card (in
Windows) hears broadcasting of an Access Point and notifies the right length.

Is this right?

I just picked up a WRT54G from the store... has the most up to date Firmware. I also have a pBook 12 with the APX card in it... if I switch the AP to be "G-only" then my pBook can't see it. It works fine under the "mixed" setting.

Is there a way that I can confirm what speed the APX is running at? I'd hate to think that I spent the cash to get a G AP to have it run at B speeds.

Cheers,
Randy

I have the exact same problems. To test to see if you are connected at G speeds, try FTP'ing to a machine that's local (don't use SAMBA or AFP, hey have too much overhead)

During an FTP of a 142MB file, i had a sustained transfer rate of 4MB a second, you multiply by approx. 10, and you're at 40Mb/s, well above the 802.11b standard

btw i say you multiply by 10 instead of 8 because of the additionaly overhead of an async wireless network.

you should probably try this close to the ap.

I have my belkin card working, with the exception of the signal meter never showing less than 4 bars.

If i go to school 2 miles away it still shows 4 bars but gets a network error and crashes my computer when i click the signal meter.

Is this a belkin firmware problem or is it something i have done?

Is there NO way to know if an airport extreme card (in a powerbook), it operating in g mode? I have the same problem. A 12" powerbook with an airport extreme card and a linksys wrt54g. If I put the wrt54g in g only mode, the mac doesn't see it. In mixed mode it works, but how do I know what mode???
