I don't know where I've been hiding, but aparently Nextel's packet data service has come of age a bit in the last year. Rather than using your Nextel phone to make data calls into your own house/company/ISP (which is slow, costs you minutes and takes an eternity to connect), you can now just use your phone as a connection directly to the Internet.
Of course, Nextel only really supports this on a PC, but it appears to work just fine on *nix machines and a Mac. You have to get your Mac(hine) talking to the phone (Check out the iDen modem script and 232A driver hack), then just tell Internet Connect that the "phone number" is "S=2". All done. I've been getting about 20 kbps or so, with not-great latency. I sort of compare the agregate experience to not-quite-first-generation-Ricochet, but it's the best offer I've had so far...
Posted by nsayer at February 6, 2003 01:58 PMI purchased the cable from Nextel that hooks the phone up to the Serial adapter. Then I purchased the Keyspan High Speed adapter for USB to Serial. Here is my problem.. What is happening I have tried everything. I have the iDEN Plus script. I've had the Internet Connect phone number to both my regular dial up number and S=2. It keeps coming up telling me that it's contacting PPP then Disconnecting only to pop and say "A modem error occurred. Please verify you settings and try again" message. All I am wanting to do is check my email from my phone. I have the Data Package turned on my phone. Why it's not working is beyond my knowledge.. PLEASE HELP ME... Someone even told me to try using virtualPC and hooking it up that way.. I don't want to do that. I hear of people doing it, it's just not working for me. I have the i90c phone.
PLEASE HELP.. I AM SO GRATEFUL TO ANY AND ALL INFO.

It sounds like you put the iDen scripts (drivers) in fine, but you did not set it for the phone. Go into the Network Preferences and double cick on the iDen modem. The last tab should say "Modem". In the modem drop-down list, choose the one for the iDen phone. The error you are getting sounds like the error I got before when I didnt select the iDen script.
Posted by: Keith at December 19, 2003 04:19 PMDoes anybody have experience using the Nextel iM100 Wireless modem with a Mac using OS X10.3? Supposed to be "PC Only" Would like any input before I possibly take the plunge.
Posted by: Jerry Hwang at February 29, 2004 02:20 PMI, too, would be interested in any info about getting Nextel's chosen wireless modem card, the iM100, working under OS X. I haven't been able to find any information on it by Google searching, which upsets me.
Posted by: Chris at May 10, 2004 07:29 AMI don't know for certain, but I'd be fairly confident that it's a standard COM style "modem" card, and that you simply configure it to dial "S=2" as the phone number. Go ahead and take the plunge - Nextel has a reasonable return policy, last I heard.
I was able to connect to the i90c phone using the "s=2". I'm able to ping out everywhere but it looks like I could only port 80 (http) over to http://nextel.com. Does anyone have any ideas why?
Posted by: Jack at March 9, 2005 05:58 PMThe iM1100 is no longer supported by SmithMicro in the current version and the current version is required for Tiger. Boooo!!
