I use Nextel's dialup data service to get on the Internet. To get this working on a mac, I had to sort of hack together a modem script. I took the Ricochet one and neutered it a little bit, and came up with this. Unpack it and put the file in /Libraries/Modem Scripts. You may need to speed-lock your phone's serial port to 57,600 bps to get it to work. Having done this, you merely plug the phone's serial cable into any serial port you can get to work on your OS X machine (this entry for the IOGear -232A) and set up InternetConnect in the traditional manner.
Just a small update. It's no longer necessary to use a serial port to connect up to the phone. Motorola/Nextel sell a USB cable for the iDen series of phones. It acts like a USB modem device, which is one of the standard types of USB devices (like printers, keyboards, mice and joysticks). It just magically works with OS X. You still need the modem script to be able to properly dial the iDen phone, though.
Nick,
I tried the above and all worked except that I only get 2400 and I cannot resolve any names even if in a dns server under the ppp conncetion. I have the i85s and keyspan serial adapter locked at 57600... Any ideas...

andreas
Works like a charm, though a bit slow, but better than nothing when a land line isn't available. My setup: Powerbook G4 running Mac OS 10.2.6, Nextel i90c, motorola USB data cable. Called Nextel to add dial-up service to my account. Takes about 8-12 hrs for it to become active. During this time, I plugged phone into the computer with the USB cable went to the Network control pane were it was recognized as a new device. The name was blank though, no problem with that just double click on the blank spot after adding it and name it what ever you want(I named mine i90c Nextel modem). Don't forget to put in all your service provider information such as DNS server info and domain search name into the TCP/IP Tab, dial up phone number, user name, and password. When completed and the dial up service is active, go to internet connect select the Nextel modem and hit connect. You should be good to go!

Posted by: Larry C at June 30, 2003 10:30 PMHey guys can you get this to work for a windows machine and if so what would i exactly need?
nextel and motorola offer all the software you need on their websites to make dial-up connections.
you need to call nextel and get their dial-up service, something like $10.00/mo and it uses your minutes. then you need either the USB data cable or the serial data cable (i would recommend USB just because it's better.)
then all you need is the dial-up software that comes with it. motorola actually has a small tutorial if you don't want to install any software.
hope this helps.

You can try Nextel Packetstream service. The only thing different about that is that the phone number you dial is "S=2"

Posted by: selcouth at February 16, 2004 10:38 PMI have few problems; first let me tell you what I’m running. I got a 1GB Powerbook, with this i58sr Nextel phone, I have just paid for the serious, thinking that it would be way cool to take it were ever I go. So I downloaded the modem drive from above that went all good, I made it so that it acts like another modem It even says data call set up, every now and then but the major problem is that the computer comes back to say that there was no dial tone or that there was no connection made. I also have a problem/question, I don’t know if Nextel gives out user names and passwords and even dial up numbers, so what I did was put a SBC account number in and nothing happens??? Some one Please help, this sounds so cool and it is costing me !!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Daniel at May 18, 2004 03:22 PMHey there Daniel, I assume you're dialing up using you own ISP. Be sure to enter your ISPs DNS server name and DNS server IPs into the TCP/IP network dialog box. Good luck.
Posted by: richc at May 20, 2004 02:47 PMFYI:
For everyone that keeps getting the dialup service.. it's only 9600bps. Thats really slow... VERY VERY slow. But it's circuit data-- you're going over the voice line. Packetstream Gold can give you near 56k connection speeds. It's compressed-- so not "real".

Also, Here is something very interesting for Nextel Phones:
FREE UNLIMITED INTERNET & MESSAGING FOR NEXTEL IDEN PHONES!
There is a loop hole in the Nextel system that allows anybody to get free unlimited internet, email, and messaging on any iden Nextel phone. As far as I know, it is perfectly legal.
If you have a Nextel iden phone and no wireless web or messaging plan, follow ALL of the the steps below.
If you already have a wireless web plan but pay for text messages, you can use the steps below to utilize unlimited free messaging (follow steps 2-6 below and bookmark the site).
If you already have wireless web and text messaging, there is still some cool stuff to do on the teknidude WAP site (got to: www.teknidude.com/wap/index.asp#home on your phone's browser or follow steps 3-5 and bookmark the site).
Instructions:
1. Call Nextel and have them add pay as you go text messaging plan (there is no charge for this unless you send/receive text messages, this will get you a sub ID).
2. Allow enough time (usually a couple of hours - you will see a globe in the upper right of the phone's display) for the service to be activated, then call Nextel and have the text messaging blocked (there is no charge for this).
3. On your phone, got to menu - net - my account (Nextel.com) - sub id, write down the sub ID numbers.
4. on your PC go to http://www.teknidude.com/wap/alert.asp, enter your phone's Sub ID (as described), and "send alert" to your phone.
5. Your phone will receive a net alert, open the net alert and you will go to a similar start page like the paid Nextel one. You can now surf the internet, send text, check email, etc. using this net alert to connect to the wireless internet.
6. You will need to use this net alert each time you want to connect to the internet on your phone. If the net alert gets deleted in the future, simply repeat step 4 above.
7. The only drawback is that it may use your plan minutes.
Chow!

Posted by: Mike at October 25, 2005 04:33 PMOk, I got it working.
1. Get the USB Cable. Use the Modem Script from nsayer.
2. Get the Unlimited Data Access ($10/month) at:
http://nextelonline.nextel.com/en/solutions/dataaccess/data_access_plan.shtml
NOT the Unlimted Wireless Access Plant ($45!)
3. Wait for about 30 minutes.
4. Setup the Telephone number as S=2. Use "some" username and Password
5. Setup the Device as some of the posts describe above...Turn off all option in PPP options. Turn off Error Compression etc. I don think any of this makes a difference.
6. and the click on dial-now.
7. YOu will be shown as connected at 2400bps - but I was getting 3kbps (56K) speed.
Wow! Now I'm truly wireless!!!
This post is via my first nextel wireless net connnection!!\

Posted by: mike sash at December 31, 2005 12:28 AMI can't quite get it working. I have a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.4 and an i730 cellphone. I have the Motorola/Nextel USB cable. I have the Nick Sayer script in my /Library/Modem Scripts directory (thanks Nick). I had to restart with the cable/phone connected to get the Mac to "see" the new device, and it shows up, as a blank (where do I give it a name?)
When I use INternet Connect and "Connect", the phone displays "Data Call Setup", then "Call failed, Number not in service", and Internet Connect displays "No carrier detected". I checked - it's the right number.
If I change the device's Modem characteristics to set "Wait for dial tone", it's the same sequence except that the error from Internet Connect is "No dial tone detected".
I tried "Manual Dial" in Internet Correct, and I dialed the number on the phone's keypad and hear the carrier, but when I click "Ok" in Internet Connect, Internet Connect displays "No carrier detected". The Connection Log just shows "Dialing nnnnnnnnnn", then "Connect script failed" twice.
I'm so close, I can feel it!
